Scandola and Girolata by boat from the Gulf of Sagone

This is the must-see excursion on the west coast: a sea trip to the UNESCO World Heritage Scandola Nature Reserve and the hamlet of Girolata. From the Gulf of Sagone, adventure is within boat's reach.

Scandola Reserve

Red porphyry cliffs plunging into a turquoise sea, caves, seabird colonies and protected waters: Scandola can only be visited by sea, which preserves its wild beauty. The boats follow the coast as close as possible, where the road does not go.

Girolata, the village without a road

Nestled around its Genoese tower, Girolata can only be reached by boat or on foot. Most excursions stop there: for lunch or a swim in an out-of-this-world setting.

The Calanche de Piana

Many of the outings also pass in front of the Calanche de Piana, these red granite needles sculpted by erosion, also classified by UNESCO. Seen from the sea, they take on a spectacular dimension, especially in the late afternoon.

Our practical advice

Book in advance in summer, opt for a morning outing (calmer sea, softer light), bring a cap, sunscreen and a windbreaker. Several companies offer departures from the Gulf and nearby ports. Several companies depart directly from Sagone.
